Thanksgiving

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanksgiving Day is a holiday celebrated primarily in the United States and Canada. Thanksgiving is celebrated each year on the second Monday of October in Canada and on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States. Thanksgiving in Canada falls on the same day as Columbus Day in the United States. Because of the longstanding traditions of the holiday, the celebration often extends to the weekend that falls closest to the day it is celebrated.

History

Thanksgiving in North America had originated from a mix of European and Native traditions.[1] Typically in Europe, festivals were held before and after the harvest cycles to give thanks for a good harvest, and to rejoice together after much hard work with the rest of the community.[1] At the time, Native Americans had also celebrated the end of a harvest season.[1] When Europeans first arrived to the Americas, they brought with them their own harvest festival traditions from Europe, celebrating their safe voyage, peace and good harvest.[1] Though the origins of the holiday in both Canada and the United States are similar, Americans do not typically celebrate the contributions made in Newfoundland, while Canadians do not celebrate the contributions made in Plymouth, Massachusetts.[2]

The origin of the first Thanksgiving in Canada goes back to the explorer, Martin Frobisher, who had been trying to find a northern passage to the Pacific Ocean. Frobisher's Thanksgiving celebration was not for harvest, but in thanks for surviving the long journey from England through the perils of storms and icebergs. On his third and final voyage to these regions in 1578 Frobisher held a formal ceremony in Frobisher Bay in Baffin Island in present Day Nunavut to give thanks to God and in a service ministered by the preacher Robert Wolfall they celebrated Communion, the first

ever service in these regions.[3]Years later, the tradition of a feast would continue as more settlers began to arrive to the Canadian colonies.[4]
The origins of Canadian Thanksgiving can also be traced to the French settlers who came to New France with explorer Samuel de Champlain in the early 17th century, who also took to celebrating their successful harvests. The French settlers in the area typically had feasts at the end of the harvest season and continued throughout the winter season, even sharing their food with the indigenous peoples of the area.[5] Champlain had also proposed for the creation of the Order of Good Cheer in 1606.[6]
As many more settlers arrived in Canada, more celebrations of good harvest became common. New immigrants into the country, such as the Irish, Scottish and Germans, would also add their own traditions to the harvest celebrations. Most of the U.S. aspects of Thanksgiving (such as the turkey) were incorporated when United Empire Loyalists began to flee from the United States during the American Revolution and settled in Canada.[5]

In the United States

In the United States, the modern Thanksgiving holiday tradition traces its origins to a 1621 celebration at Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. There is also evidence for an earlier harvest celebration on the continent by Spanish explorers in Florida during 1565, as well as thanksgiving feasts in the Virginia Colony. The initial thanksgiving observance at Virginia in 1619 was prompted by the colonists' leaders on the anniversary of the settlement.[7] The 1621 Plymouth feast and thanksgiving was prompted by a good harvest. In later years, the tradition was continued by civil leaders such as Governor Bradford who planned a thanksgiving celebration and fast in 1623.[8][9][10] While initially, the Plymouth colony did not have enough food to feed half of the 102 colonists, the Wampanoag Native Americans helped the Pilgrims by providing seeds and teaching them to fish. The practice of holding an annual harvest festival like this did not become a regular affair in New England until the late 1660s.[11]
According to historian Jeremy Bangs, director of the Leiden American Pilgrim Museum, the Pilgrims may have been influenced by watching the annual services of Thanksgiving for the relief of the siege of Leiden in 1574, while they were staying in Leiden.[12]

Contending origins

The claim of where the first Thanksgiving was held in the United States, and even the Americas has often been a subject of debate. Author and teacher Robyn Gioia and Michael Gannon, of the University of Florida, have argued that the earliest attested "Thanksgiving" celebration in what is now the United States was celebrated by the Spanish on September 8, 1565, in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida.[13][14]
Similarly, many historians point out that the first thanksgiving celebration in the United States was held in Virginia, and not in Plymouth. Thanksgiving services were routine in what was to become the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607.[15] A day of Thanksgiving was codified in the founding charter of Berkeley Hundred in Charles City County, Virginia in 1619.[16]

Fixing the date of the holiday

The reason for the earlier Thanksgiving celebrations in Canada has often been attributed to the earlier onset of winter in the north, thus ending the harvest season earlier.[17] Thanksgiving in Canada did not have a fixed date until the late 19th century. Prior to Canadian confederation, many of the individual colonial governors of the Canadian provinces had declared their own days of Thanksgiving. The first official Canadian Thanksgiving occurred on April 15, 1872 when the nation was celebrating the Prince of Wales' recovery from a serious illness.[17] By the end of the 19th Century, Thanksgiving Day was normally celebrated on November 6. However, when World War I ended, the Armistice Day holiday were usually held during the same week. To prevent the two holidays from clashing with one another, in 1957 the Canadian Parliament proclaimed Thanksgiving to be observed on its present date on the second Monday of October.[5] Since 1971, when the American Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect, the American observance of Columbus Day has coincided with the Canadian observance of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving in the United States, much like in Canada, was observed on various dates throughout history. The dates of Thanksgiving in the era of the Founding Fathers until the time of Lincoln had been decided by each state on various dates. The first Thanksgiving celebrated on the same date by all states was in 1863 by presidential proclamation. The final Thursday in November had become the customary date of Thanksgiving in most U.S. states by the beginning of the 20th century. And so, in an effort by President Abraham Lincoln (influenced by the campaigning of author Sarah Josepha Hale) to foster a sense of American unity between the Northern and Southern states, proclaimed the date to be the final Thursday in November.[15]
It was not until December 26, 1941, that the unified date changed to the fourth Thursday (and not always final) in November -this time by federal legislation. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, after two years earlier offering his own proclamation to move the date earlier, with the reason of giving the country an economic boost, agreed to sign a bill into law with Congress, making Thanksgiving a national holiday on the fourth (not final) Thursday in November.

Observance around the world

Canada

Main article: Thanksgiving (Canada)
Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day (Canadian French: Jour de l'Action de grĂ¢ce), occurring on the second Monday in October, is an annual Canadian holiday to give thanks at the close of the harvest season. Although the original act of Parliament references God and the holiday is celebrated in churches, the holiday is mostly celebrated in a secular manner. Thanksgiving is a statutory holiday in all provinces in Canada, except for Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia. While businesses may remain open in these provinces, the holiday is nonetheless, recognized and celebrated regardless of its status.[18][19][20][21][22]

Liberia

In the West African country of Liberia, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the first Thursday of November.[23]

The Netherlands

Many of the Pilgrims who migrated to the Plymouth Plantation had resided in the city of Leiden from 1609–1620, many of whom had recorded their birth, marriages and deaths at the Pieterskerk.[24] To commemorate this, a non-denominational Thanksgiving Day service is held each year on the morning of the American Thanksgiving Day in the Pieterskerk, a Gothic church in Leiden, to commemorate the hospitality the Pilgrims received in Leiden on their way to the New World.[25]

Norfolk Island

In the Australian external territory of Norfolk Island, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the last Wednesday of November, similar to the pre-World War II American observance on the last Thursday of the month. This means the Norfolk Island observance is the day before or six days after the United States' observance. The holiday was brought to the island by visiting American whaling ships.[26]

United States

Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, currently celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November by federal legislation in 1941, has been an annual tradition in the United States by presidential proclamation since 1863 and by state legislation since the Founding Fathers of the United States. Historically, Thanksgiving began as a tradition of celebrating the harvest of the year.[27]

Life second chances

What is life second chance is something that sometimes we can’t explain and sometimes we don’t take full advantage of it this is a true story happened to my mom may she rest in peace

Everything happened for a reason that what everyone say well sometimes is hard to understand why I was on an afternoon when I came from work and when I open the door I saw a lot of blood in the living room and then I saw my mother on the floor immediately my ex girlfriend call 911 for help she was still breathing but she was unconscious the ambulance came and they take her to the hospital I went with her and then my family was going to be there later while we were at the hospital they were doing test and checking her up she started to speak and I ask her about what happened and she that she was not feeling well and the thing that keep her alive was that she was able to throw up and then she say she fainted and she was not remember anything else so I explain what happened when I came from work and I find her like that them my family arrived and  my dad who has been by my mother side all this year started to get worry then the doctor arrived and explain to us that she was lucky for throw up all that blood but she still need to stay at the hospital for more check ups days gone bye and when I was on my way to see her the doctor saw me and he told me that she had cancer and like everyone else when find out something like that my eyes starting to get watery and I told him what are the options he say either kemo or surgery once my mother find out she started to cried to tell you the true when we were in Cuba she was never a religious person she dint believe much in god she starting to believe in him when they kick me out school and it was the school fault but they dint want to admitted and she went there and talk to the school director and they give me another chance to do my final test that how she believe that there is something out there that can change peoples life so she say after they told her that she had cancer that everything was on god hands and it truly was she opted for surgery but the hospital dint want to risk it and them a doctor for a catholic hospital one of the best in the country say he do the surgery and the hospital pays for it so he transfer her to that hospital and days later we were there waiting the good news on how the surgery was going after 10 ½ hours the doctor came out and told us that everything was good and they were able to remove all the cancer and it was true they do a scanner on her and see no sign of the cancer anywhere once she get out the hospital it was like a new day for her she was feeling happy that god was able to intervene and that everything went well .

Back in the days she used to smoke a lot my father drink a lot and sometimes my father embarrassed a lot with his drinking problem that she decide it to join him every time he drink and at the end she started drinking more than him at the place we were living next door neighborhood he was a witchcraft and I think he got tired of my mother late night drinking with other people that he must have done something to her cause she told me that he give her a bear and when she drink it she felt something estrange but she continue to drink however after what happened to her she stop drinking completely quick smoking I took her to her first kemo therapy but when she started hear the effect of what kemo does she got scare and she never went anymore but she was feeling well however second chances you really need do everything by the book and she starting doing thing like she used to in the pass all at home we tell her to stop but she dint pay us much of a attention and then it happened she started to get sick again and this time was worse she starting to have problem breath and she was rush to the hospital again and the cancer came back again after month of going out the hospital and going back she decide to get the kemo but it was to late now the cancer was to strong this time the night before she die she started to having problem breath we call the ambulance but the paramedic told me something that makes a lot of sense if we take her to the hospital she will be in more pain cause they were starting to put needles on her she be in even more pain he told me leave her here with you guys at least if she die she will be at home with the people she love it was hard to make that decision but we decide to leave her at home but she dint last that long she died the next day

To my point never take life for granted when you are awarded a second chance a lot of people don’t get that opportunity enjoy every moment of it and it you do get a second chance make the best of it don’t get back to your old ways this is a true story most people don’t even get second chance in life

The promise I made to my mother

Is been almost two year since my mother die and something in the back of my head keep bothering and until I fulfilled is not going to go away when I came from Cuba in 1997 I just finish there the 10 grade I went to school here but I never got to finish high school and I told her I will do whatever it takes to finish so I take a home school course but somehow along the way money was tight and cant continue to pay for the school and have to stop doing it and she keep insisting on me to do it again but for one reason or another something was always in the way and then my mother start to get sick with the cancer and took my mind out that then I started my own family and that take even more time out me more problems occur and no one to blame but me for not sticking to the task at hand and a couple years ago I told her that I was going to do it again and I even promise her that I was going to finish this time I am doing my high school diploma and so far I am doing pretty good I know once I am done she will be proud even know she is not here to see it I know that everything I do she is looking over and once I get the diploma she will be even more proud of me for making it a reality the only thing I wish is to see her smile on her face when finally get the diploma and look at the sky and say no promise is never broken if you have the valor to make happened

How my understanding improve since the I came to the states

Since I came in 1997 my understanding of the language English has been improve substantial enough that I can create conversation with almost any one I can talk about any topic like if I was talking in my birth language Spanish I never thought I could learn a language cause when I was in high school they were teaching English but I really was not concentrating enough to pay attention and I dint have the interest to learn however I never thought ever I was leaving the country even know my dad is a political refugee and he have the chance to leave the country anytime he want all he has to do was present the paper at the embassy and he can leave once they approve him however he dint want to leave his family behind and at that time we could still make end meat even know the country was in a very bad shape in every aspect especially economic it was hard to stay a flow everyone there just tried to survive and some back staving people with prices on food they dint care if they know you since you were born but then again all the blame goes to the people in charge them we left the country and came to the states were we went to Alabama which it was the perfect place to learn I went to the school there I have my share of embarrassing moments where I was ready to give up but my inner soul was not ready to throw the towel in cause the way I am is not in me to quit I never been a quitter I am a fighter and the language was not going to slow me down but I wont lie if for a moment in my life I was ready to give up when I was in my country were some times that was really hard for me but I understand the language and I was able to speak however when I was in school here classes that it use to be easy for me became hard cause I cant understand the teacher and anyone around me but I don’t know what it is about me that I always have a good effect on people that they willing to help me even if they don’t know me that well the second in charge at the school help me a lot he even told my mother that I was one of the best person he ever meet and my mom was so proud of me they been change my classes and they put me in one where they teach English to student from outside the usa to tell you the true I dint learn anything in that class the teacher had more preference to the Vietnams people in the class than the rest of us but it dint stop me from learning the language my way I was determined to learn and help my family when they need to read a letter or buy something at the store or even return something in my time at the school I meet another Cuban guy that he came 3 years before me and he help me also I meet more people in there but the inability to speak or understand was making it difficult to keep adding more friends however I started to using the subtitle on the TV on every program I watch I even use my favorite TV show wwf was call at that time now wwe and listen to what they saying every time someone was talking on the microphone I started understand little by little one time my friend and I went to the store to exchange a Nintendo 64 for a play station that my father bough me and I listen to every word he say and when I feel ready enough I went with my mother to a one of those places like rent to own cause she want it to buy a living room and I was able to talk to the people there and translate to my mother word for word to everything that she was saying and also I was able to speak to the person there everything that my mother wanting to know when we done that I came out the store I told her I am ready I don’t need anyone help anymore and since I been in this country for like 14 years now I been able to do thing that in my wildest dream I never thought I could so to all the people learning a new language or even living in a country that is not our own birth place never give up when thing are hard just remember that there is not an easy road in life and don’t get me wrong they are but not the safest one just remember at the end of every straggle in life is the satisfaction of being able to say I did just like me I am a living proof that with a little inner strength you can accomplish anything even if it is speak a language outside of your own

Distance is not for the fearful ... It is for the tough and the brave..

Distance is not for the fearful, it is for the bold. It's for those who are willing to spend alot of time alone in exchange for a little time with the one they love. It's for those knowing a good thing when they see it, even if they don't see it nearly enough...

What is love?

Oh man. Here we go. I might have to make a part two to this. But love. What is love? Love is the feeling and emotion for something and someone that you find attractive and pleasurable in your mind and heart. Love can be to many things, hobbies, possessions, events, and especially people. Love for humans. That is truly amazing. Love in humans is so indescribable, that I don't even think I can say it all on this post. The willingness to go out of your way, your comfort zone, to sacrifice what you like to do more of this and less of that, to go out of your way, for someone because you love them, is beyond me. I use to have a girlfriend that I thought I loved. But it was blinded from what I wanted to do, people, and mistakes. But that feeling can still linger after so long. Anyways, love...
LOVE IS HAPPINESS. To be able to see the same person, everyday , no matter what they look like, what they've done, what they've said, who they're with, where they're from, how they do things, and still love them truly a miracle from God. You don't love someone when you change them because you have too; you love someone when they change you...
LOVE IS SACRIFICIAL. People everyday, sacrifice money, time, friends, family, events, opportunities, experiences, openings, etc... For someone they love. You have to do that extra, because you love someone so much. And this is what I love about love so much. It makes people want to go out of their way to make that person smile. Did you catch that? It makes someone WANT to go out of their way to make that person smile. And that just astounds me at times. That little extra to be cuter, funnier, or wittier then the next guy for him/her is the greatest accomplishment for the lover...
LOVE IS UNENDING. Love is Unending. You can never stop it. No matter how many mistakes you made or that person made, you know deep down that you can't starry away from that person. It just felt, right, to a point where when it stops even for a second, you lose who you are. It's boundless and always there, never stopping for a second because you don't want to even have the risk of losing it...
LOVE IS CUTE. Yeah, so what if people see you hug her/him from behind and say those married couple nicknames? So what if you tell your friends "nah I can't because I need to be with that person tonight"? So what if you have to tell that person in front of EVERYBODY something important? So what if you hold her hand, or hug her, or kiss her in front of EVERYBODY? So what if you stay up all night to talk to that person, just to say good morning in a matter of minutes? So what if you look like garbage but you need to see that person right away? So what if everyone tells you "No, it's not going to work" or " No she's/he's not right for you just look at him/her!"? So what...
But anyways, what is love? Love is that feeling that keeps someone alive. It is the reason why each and every one of us are here now, in this world. We were made to love and accept it...
So, when you see that person. No matter when or where. You don't walk, but run. RUN to that person, hug him/her as HARD as you can and just whisper "I Love you and nothing will ever change that."
Go. Find that person. He's/she's waiting... :)

Why married now are consider a joke?

Back in the days when people married like everything in life is a process that all have to go through in order to get married first there is the romance where couples get to know each other for at least considerable amount of time before they decide that they belong with one another before making the big commitment cause tell you the true married is no joke when someone get married they consider to be the most important thing in there life is like a special day where they can impress there friend and throwing a party like no one seen before and also is commit me to each other for life when my mother and father married they were dating for almost 2 years how they meet easy question they were neighborhood the only thing separating them was just a long wall not to high cause they can see each others faces and that’s how they became lovers and they were married for 29 years until my mother pass away due to cancer but even to this day he still single with no plans of looking for a replacement he still pretty much in love with her even know she is not here anymore but his love for her defined any obstacle and even dead but back to my point now days people want to get married cause they think if they don’t do that there time will run out and they will never get another chance of enjoy that special day however married is something that no one should take lightly cause the have some good and bad the good part of being married is that you are sure you find the right woman/man in your life and you are ready to spend the rest of your life with that person no matter what the bad part is that sometimes being with one person for a very long time sometimes get really boring the love is not the same after a big while and people start questioning about everything however back in the days they have the same problems but they always find the way to overcome any situation and always making sure there married work now days people take married like is a joke and just to say the word I am married they do whatever just to say that even married some and last only 72 days that’s not right so people next time you decide I want to get married don’t make the same mistake people do make sure that you really want it for the long haul cause then you be one the statistic and that something you don’t want to be in hopefully in years to come people will be more serious about it and respect what married is all about don’t treat that special day to a point that in a week , months or even year you regret it for the rest of your live

Please leave comments always appreciate any thing anyone have to say about it

Power of Love

By Hemakumar Nanayakkara

Drown deeply in starry sparkling eyes
Bathe soothingly in the sea of romance
Float smoothly on curving water waves
Disappear the blues in aquamarine ocean.

Fly high across unlimited moonlit sky
Stray among stars in a faraway milky way
Glide towards galaxies of celestial lights
Let the troubles disappear in afar darkness.

Blissful whispers flow all over in the air
Moments of joy adorn the serenity of lives
Wondrous times harmonize every heart and mind
Existence of true love lasts forever-timeless.

Swiftly lead into raptures over divine true romance
Adorable smiles blooming like blossoms of red roses
Trail bewitching paths cherishing every amorous moment
United hearts surrender to the supreme power of love.

"Relationships"

INFIDELITY- yea it's bound to happen in a relationship people do cheat on their spouses in a relationship sometimes boyfriends/girlfriends tend to get bored with their relationships and want to find someone new to replace him/her maybe because the sex wasn't hot enough or maybe because he/she just wanted someone more fun than him/her .....

COMMUNICATION BREAKDOWN - okay this tends to happen a lot now a day in a relationship where people will talk for a long time then after awhile communication stops like theirs less calling and less talking face to face.....

SEXUAL INCOMPATIBILITY- okay now talking about the sexual stuff if theres not enough sex in the relationship then the relationship will get really boring really fast and sometimes guys/girls will get mad or angry if his/her relationship doesn't have sex with them very often as he/she wants them too and this can be one of the major reasons why guys/girls tends to leave their relationship cause he/she isn't getting enough sex.....

Beat Holiday Debt Now

A friend recently confessed to me that she's still paying off last year's holiday gift-buying bills! Start saving today so you don't ring in the New Year with a Visa hangover.
By Beth Kobliner

1. Budget and don't budge .
Figure out exactly how much you can afford to drop on presents without jeopardizing your regular bills. Then, siphon off a little money from each paycheck for the next six weeks so you aren't dipping into your emergency savings or relying on credit to play Secret Santa. Consider stashing the cash in a savings account (watch out for fees!) so you aren't tempted to blow it.

2. Skip Black Friday . The day after Thanksgiving is the gateway to holiday spending sprees. Though you may find some deals, retailers have a dirty little secret: "For a limited time only" or "While supplies last" promotions are classic ways to trick you into buying things you don't need by making you think they're about to sell out. (They rarely are.) My strategy: Avoid the frenzy by knocking your whole list out by the week before Thanksgiving. The morning after Turkey Day? Stay home and eat pie.

3. Buy virtually . Shoppers are willing to pay about 50 percent more for stuff they can actually touch, according to a recent study from Caltech, so the free samples and product demos stores offer during the holidays can put a wrench in your spending plan. Try to stick to the Internet, and make your first stop couponsherpa.com to score special discount codes.
